PSEC portrait challenge 2013 results

The results are in but I am a bit late on reporting it. Sorry. All usual I was nervous as a leaf shaking. The surprise model was George Dedoyard, a superb artist from Laval. I had only met him during the plein air in Tremblant. Denis had asked him to be the model and it was a very good choice. Here are pictures of the portraits we did.

PSEC portrait challenge 2013

I was invited again this year to participate in the PSEC portrait challenge. This is year has the same line up. Master pastelliste Denis Jacques, master pastelliste Juan Cristobal, last year's grand prize winner Ann Rochefort and me. I feel tiny among giants...hehe. Butterflies are coming back...Oh! its this Friday November 1st at Ogilvy's (5th floor) in Montreal. Pastels starts flyin' at 4pm and finishes at 6pm. Silverpoint stuff

I prepared a bunch of boards for silverpoint. I used matboards and illustration boards. I used Golden brand gesso for silverpoint and used a 2.5 inch brush to apply it.

The brush is a cheap brush from the hardware store so I had to keep an eye for falling bristles. The gesso dries pretty fast so I had to work fast too.

I did several different sizes. 8x10, 10x12, 16x20.

I started working on a double portrait of my aunt and uncle's wedding picture. I started using pencil and eraser to draw out the placement. After erasing the pencil, it gives a shiny finish to the gesso so I decided to abandon the pre drawing thing. Ok, Kawabunga here I go!

Here are the first marks. You cannot see it very right now but I just start placing the head on the right side of the double portrait.

Thomas Edison

This is a latest portrait I did of Thomas Edison. Its charcoal on paper 18x24. I also posted a wip progression video.

This is a portrait of Marc Twain. Charcoal on bond paper, 14x17. It was done during the Festival de Peinture a Mascouche on Saturday.

Hi folks. Its been awhile since I have updated the blog. I have been busy. I started teaching drawing portraits at home for the first time. I have 5 students in total. They are former students from previous classes I have. Here is a demo sketch I gave showing the gride technique. You can see the grid lines around the portrait.
